Notting Hill is a London community on the west side of the city, and it has a contemporary reputation as a fashionable area that’s known for high-end shopping and restaurants. It’s also known for its large Victorian townhouses with attractive terraces. West London is home to 1.6 million people, and the Notting Hill community includes the neighborhoods of Ladbroke Grove, Notting Hill Gate, Portobello Road (home of the Portobello Road Market, known as one of the world’s largest antiques markets), Westbourne Grove, and North Kensington.
Notting Hill has long been affiliated with artists and alternative cultures, and is a popular setting for films and novels, including the much-loved movie starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts.
When Notting Hill was initially developed in the 1800s, houses were designed to have direct access to a secluded communal garden in the rear, to which people on the street did not have access and generally could not see. These communal garden squares continue to provide the area with much of its attraction for the wealthiest householders.
Parts of Notting Hill are characterized by stucco-fronted houses with pillar porches, private and communal gardens, access to public parks at Holland Park and Kensington Gardens, and shops.
There are four tube stations in the area, at Westbourne Park, Ladbroke Grove, Latimer Road and Notting Hill Gate, making it easy to get around the London community.
