Notting Hill Gate is one of the main thoroughfares of Notting Hill, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Notting Hill Gate is named after a turnpike gate that was constructed at the foot of the hill on the main road from London to Uxbridge. The gate was built there to prevent people from passing along the road without paying. The proceeds were used to maintain this important road, and the gate was removed in the 19th century.
Notting Hill Gate was greatly redeveloped in the 1950s when two large tower blocks were constructed on the north and south sides of the street. The tube station was also rehabilitated, linking previously separate lines and creating a pedestrian subway under the street.
The area’s two popular and historic theatres, the Notting Hill Coronet and The Gate, have both been preserved and continue to operate today.
Notting Hill Gate is populated with a variety of restaurants, cafes, stores, antique shops, bars and clubs. It is also home of the legendary Record and Tape Exchange shops. Also of note, he Gate Bar, which is located in the basement of the Gate Cinema, was used as a location in the television comedy Absolutely Fabulous. And the loft at 18 Powis Terrace was used as the residence for the American reality TV show, The Real World: London, which aired in 1995.
