Portobello Road (or Portobello Street) is a popular stop for West London shopping in the Portobello Road Market, or just to take in the hustle and bustle of the marketplace. The street is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and is almost parallel with Ladbroke Grove.
The range of communities surrounding Portobello Road contributes to its cosmopolitan and energetic atmosphere, as do the many restaurants and pubs. Dominating the area and squeezed into every available space are mid- to late-Victorian terrace houses and shops.
The Portobello Film Festival takes place in venues along Portobello Road, and is attended by over 15,000 film enthusiasts each year. Portobello Road is also home to the Grade II Electric Cinema, one of Britain's oldest movie theatres.
And of course the Portobello Road Market should not be missed. It began as a fresh food market in the 1800s, and antiques dealers became a fixture of the market in the 1960s. The main market day for antiques is Saturday; however, there are also fruit and vegetable stalls in the market. These stalls are located further north than the antiques, near the Westway Flyover, and they tend to trade throughout the week. Typically the market stretches from Golberne Road to Westbourne Grove.
